ELVIS - "NEW YEAR'S EVE" (Civic Center Arena, Pittsburgh, PA - December 31st, 1976) [VG AUD - FLAC]

Benché tratto da un nastro di prima generazione, ripulito a dovere con sofisticate tecniche digitali, e in formato FLAC, si tratta pur sempre di un Audience Recording. Uno Show registrato dal pubblico, insomma, e quindi con tutte le imperfezioni del caso: applausi "in primo piano", urla di acclamazione dei fans e qualche commento ad alta voce. Tuttavia - oltre all'effetto gradevole e straniante (almeno per me) di trovarsi catapultati in un'arena gremita da 16,000 persone festanti che cantano "Auld Lang Syne" insieme ad Elvis in attesa del 1977 - si tratta di una Performance spettacolare di Presley, forse la più energica e vigorosa nell'arco di due mesi, che può vantare interpretazioni incendiarie di "See See Rider", "Trying To Get To You" e "Polk Salad Annie", così come di versioni maestose e solenni di brani popolarissimi quali "Hurt" e "Unchained Melody". E comunque, a dispetto dei "piccoli" difetti della registrazione amatoriale d'antan, la qualità audio si avvicina molto a quelle effettuate da un mixer. Mai come in questo caso si può affermare che la bellezza sta nelle orecchie di chi ascolta ;-) Il mio giudizio? 8½ al concerto e 6½-7 all'audio.

Buongiorno! O "BUONASERA"? E' una sorta di indovinello che risolverete ascoltando il Boot degli Zep... Si tratta dello show di Zurigo del loro ultimissimo Tour, quello europeo del 1980. La qualità audio è fantastica, ad eccezione di pochi minuti di registrazione Audience. L'unico, trascurabile neo del concerto è "Kashmir", a tal punto abborracciata e pasticciata dalla band che Plant si sentì in dovere di giustificare la deludente performance e mettere in guardia chi stava presumibilmente registrando lo spettacolo: "If anybody's bootlegging that, you'll have to scratch that number 'cause wasn't completely correct - somehow we got through it."
Si dice che lo show sia stato filmato in modo professionale...

"One of the best shows from the 1980 tour, this show has a great version of Heartbreaker and The Train Kept a Rollin'. Jimmy flashes between inspired playing and getting his fingers caught in the strings. The rest of the group play well and seem to be having fun, although they totally botch Kashmir. That caused Plant to commented it: "If anybody's bootlegging that, you'll have to scratch that number cause wasn't completely correct - somehow we got through it." Robert's voice is in great shape." Qui potete trovare un articolo sul concerto, anche se il critico musicale che lo ha vergato pare non abbia assistito al concerto: Reed, al contrario di quanto sostiene il recensore, non ha affatto eseguito "Walk On The Wild Side" né, tantomeno, si è limitato a privilegiare "brani meno noti o più recenti". Non definirei proprio "Romeo Had Juliette", "The Day John Kennedy Died" o "The Blue Mask" come brani freschi di studio o misconosciuti (senza contare il fatto, inoltre, che tra "Romeo and Juliet" e "Romeo Had Juliette" corre una bella differenza). Il giornalista, poi, si sofferma sulle doti canore del rocker newyorchese, battezzando come "inconfondibile" l'"incedere meccanico e nasale della [sua] voce". E a questo punto sorge spontaneo il dubbio che Zampighi - questo il cognome dell'arguto ermeneuta - stia parlando di un Eros Ramazzotti alticcio piuttosto che del co-fondatore dei Velvet Underground. Già, perché tutto si può dire su un "maudit" come Reed, tranne che sia una sorta di "cant-automa" dalle nari occluse. Uno che, da poeta acclarato qual è, "recita" le sue canzoni, modulando magistralmente il timbro vocale sulle proprie liriche. Un artista che passa con disinvoltura da registri bassi e profondi (per accompagnarti attraverso il degrado e la disperazione della suburra metropolitana), ad acuti trillanti e "falsetti d'autore" (quando ti fa intravedere la luce alla fine del tunnel...). Insomma, la voce di Mr. Lewis Allan Reed potrà essere disperata e rabbiosa, malata e feroce, ipnotica e seducente, lieve e sognante, ma mai - dico mai - meccanica e nasale.
Zampighi, infine, virgoletta sarcasticamente la parola "modica" riferendosi alla cifra d'ingresso. Ebbene, a costo di apparire spocchioso, la somma di 22 € mi pare più che congrua, considerando che il costo di un biglietto per l'ultimo concerto dato a Modena da Claudio Baglioni (con tutto il rispetto per il cantautore romano) andava dai 40 ai 69 €...

P.S. Una graditissima sorpresa, per chi come me ha avuto modo di assistere ad una decina di concerti di Lou Reed in circa tre lustri, è stato l'inserimento in scaletta di "Jesus", "una ballata in forma di laica invocazione di salvezza esistenziale" (Wikipedia), che Reed compose per il terzo eponimo album dei The Velvet Underground... Dal vivo non l'avevo mai sentita...

Ray Manzarek, the keyboardist who was a founding member of The Doors, has died. He was 74.
Publicist Heidi Robinson-Fitzgerald said in a news release that Manzarek died Monday at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany, surrounded by his family. He had been stricken by bile duct cancer.

The Doors drummer talks Jim Morrison's legacy

Manzarek founded The Doors after meeting then-poet Jim Morrison in California. The band went on to become one of the most successful rock 'n' roll acts to emerge from the 1960s and continues to resonate with fans decades after Morrison's death brought the band to an end. The Doors sold more than 100 million albums worldwide on hits like "Hello, I Love You," "Riders on the Storm," "Light My Fire," and "Break On Through to the Other Side."
Manzarek, a Chicago native, continued to remain active in music after Morrison's 1971 death. He briefly tried to hold the band together by serving as vocalist, but eventually the group fell apart. He played in other bands over the years, produced other acts, became an author and worked on films.
The Doors were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Manzarek is among the most notable keyboard players in rock history. His lead-instrument work with the band at a time when the guitar often dominated added a distinct end-times flavor that matched Morrison's often out there imagery and persona.
Morrison and Manzarek met at UCLA film school and ran into each other in Venice a few months after graduation, Manzarek recounted in a 1967 interview with Billboard.
Outwardly the two seemed so different. The strikingly tall, dark and handsome Morrison looked the part of rock star, while Manzarek, with glasses and comparatively close-cropped blonde hair, retained a more professorial look.
Inwardly, though, they were kindred spirits, as Manzarek discovered when Morrison read him the lyrics for a song called "Moonlight Drive."
"I'd never heard lyrics to a rock song like that before," Manzarek said. "We talked a while before we decided to get a group together and make a million dollars."
The band would make far more than that. The Doors, which also included guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore, has sold more than 100 million albums and their music has been re-released and repackaged multiple times over the years, been featured prominently in movies and holds an oft-debated place in rock history. Manzarek and Krieger reunited to tour as The Doors in recent years.
While Morrison, with his proto-celebrity lifestyle and tragic end, forever will remain the face of The Doors, you could argue Manzarek's keyboard work was every bit as important and helped balance some of the singer's more over-the-top moments.
His creepy organ line on "Light My Fire" adds a weirdo menace to what outwardly is a rock `n' roll pick-up song. And his after-hours, lounge style on "Riders On the Storm" transforms that song into an epic unlike anything else the band ever did.
Manzarek was portrayed by Kyle McLachlan in the 1991 Oliver Stone biopic, "The Doors," and wrote a best-selling memoir about his experiences, "Light My Fire: My Life with The Doors," in 1998.
Manzarek is survived by his wife Dorothy, son Pablo, and three grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, family members ask that donations be made in Manzarek's name to Standup2Cancer.org.

someone recently posted this Compact Disc on his blog, without citing the original "source" [me ;-) ]. It's a Single Promo CD that I bought in Paris more than twenty years ago (summer of 1992). It's entitled "ELVIS LIVE IN LAS VEGAS / From the International Hotel in Las Vegas August 1969" and it contains the famous "laughing version" of "Are You Lonesome Tonight?", plus 3 unreleased tracks ("Runaway", "Baby, What You Want Me To Do" and "Reconsider Baby"). I know that it's quite simple to find these recordings nowadays (AYLT, for example, it's been released on the FTD album "All Shook Up"), but this Compact Disc remains a collectible item anyway. It comes with covers and in WAV format... Mail me ;-)

«Audience Recording in un doppio CD che ci presenta il concerto del 31 dicembre 1975 a Pontiac, Michigan, edito in un vecchio e doppio vinile pirata del 1985 intitolato “Changing Paints“, famoso anche perché Elvis si ruppe i pantaloni durante "Polk Salad Annie" e se li andò a cambiare...

Rispetto al 33 giri il suono è notevolmente migliorato e si tratta, a quanto pare, della miglior fonte disponibile ad oggi, anche se è un po’ sotto allo standard delle “normali” registrazioni fra il pubblico. Lo show, infatti, si tenne in una gigantesca arena e tutto ciò non favoriva sicuramente questo tipo di registrazioni...

In CD lo avevamo disponibile anche in "Happy New Year from Pontiac 1975" edito nel 2001, ma quella registrazione era incompleta poiché mancava il medley "Teddy Bear - Don't Be Cruel".

In questo nuovo doppio CD Bootleg il concerto è presentato nella sua completezza e, ripeto, fino ad ora, meglio di così non si può.

Si tratta di una bella esibizione da parte di Elvis e segnalo come highlights "America (The Beautiful)", "How Great Thou Art" e "My way". Molto ben eseguita anche "It’s Now Or Never", ed è un peccato che "Wooden Heart" sia solo un accenno di mezzo minuto.»

The legendary March 20th, 1974 Memphis, TN concert has been released on a number of occasions, beginning with RCA's original 1974 LP edit with artificial applause mixed in. In 1994, a more complete, unofficial version was issued by "Fort Baxter". It was, however, a patchwork from several different sources incl. many tracks taken from the original RCA LP with overdubs. In 1997, "Steamroller Blues" was issued in pristine quality on "Platinum - A Life In Music". Finally in 2004, BMG's "Follow That Dream" the Elvis collectors label reissued this show nearly complete, in a beautiful deluxe package. But was it the definitive release? For die-hard fans it wasn't, and some viewed it as a letdown. Parts of the dialogues, introductions and even the false start of "Help Me" were omitted, and many have complained about the sound and mixing. Clearly, too much compression and artificial reverb had been applied. Well, at long last this legendary set is now truly complete, and without the audio choices made by FTD several years ago. Audionics worked with a DAT copy of an original, rough mix tape "as recorded at the Coliseum". Every bit was carefully enhanced in a renowned studio to achieve the best possible quality for your optimal listening pleasure. We hope that you enjoy the results. No remixing. No noise reduction. No edits. No artificial reverb or other added effects. No heavy compression. Just a pure, raw and natural sound. The King back in his hometown Memphis, on the 20th anniversary of his first release "That's All Right Mama". Elvis was in great form for this recording, and now, for the first time, you can enjoy the excellence of his performance that night in the best-ever sound!


My opinion:

The fellows from Audionics can be proud of their work and affirm without any doubt to have released the definitive version of the historical Memphis concert. Infact, soon after the releasing of "Fifth Time Around", many skeptical and suspicious hardcore fans began to complain about the sound and mixing of this new CD and wonder which is its "real" source... Someone said that there is nothing original, pure and rough about it, asserting that only a simple and different equalizing work has been done from an official product. Someone even stated that the Audionics release is nothin' but a straight rip from the FTD issue. Now, let me tell you that these are a bunch of bullshits! Audionics team has done a GREAT JOB! The annoying reverb has been carefully removed, Elvis' voice sounds clearer and upfront as it should be, the piano sounds sharper and more defined, the drums more prominent and fuller. And, ABOVE ALL, there's more MATERIAL (or "extras", if you prefer) on this version than on all the previous ones. If it's a straight rip from the FTD CD, then where did Audionics get the false start of "Help Me", the intros and all the other missing parts?!? My Happiness
This private acetate from 1953 is the very first recording of Elvis singing. Legend has it that he made the acetate as a present for his beloved mother.

That's All Right
The first commercial recording of Elvis. The song was recorded on a hot July day at Sun Studio in Memphis, TN. The song was originally released together with "Blue Moon Of Kentucky" on the small Sun label.

Hound Dog
This was not the first time Elvis performed on national TV in 1956, but it was this recording that caused the censor on his later TV appearances. Since his performances at the Milton Berle Show it was only allowed to film Elvis from the waist up.

Old Shep
In 1945 when Elvis was 10 years old he perform this classic Red Foley song at the "Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show". There is no recording of this event, but what is featured here is his 1956 commercial recording of the song. Elvis is even playing the piano himself.

When The Saints Go Marching In
Many people believe that Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis recorded a duet album together. They never did, but after Elvis died an album titled 'Jerry Lee Lewis And Friends' were released. It featured duets with a singer that sounded a lot like Elvis [Jimmy Ellis aka Orion, N.d.R.], but it wasn't. The only time the 'Killer' and 'the King' recorded together was during the jam session that later became known as "The Million Dollar Quartet". This jam session took place on December 4, 1956 at Sun Studio in Memphis, TN.

I'll Take You Home Kathleen
For years there has been rumours and misinformation about Elvis recording an album while he was stationed in Germany (1958-60). He didn't record anything commercially while in Germany. The only recordings that exist are some private tapes where you can hear Elvis singing songs that he considered recording when he would return to his profession. Included on this CD is an up-tempo version of the beautiful classic "I'll Take You Home Kathleen" with Elvis accompanying himself on piano.

Wooden Heart (Muss I Denn)
When Elvis was discharged from the army in 1960 one of his first projects was to make a movie inspired by his real army stay in Germany. The title of the movie is "G.I. Blues" but the most famous song from the soundtrack and even Elvis' greatest hit in Germany to this day is the German folk song "Muss I Denn" or in English "Wooden Heart". Elvis had a lot of fun recording this song and trying to sing the line "Muss i denn, muss i denn, zum Städtele hinaus, Städtele hinaus, und du mein schatz bleibst hier".

In My Fathers House
In 1960 Elvis recorded his first religious album "His Hand In Mine". The only territory in the world where this song became a hit was Scandinavia.

Datin'
You can't help but smiling when you hear Elvis' wonderful laughter. Try and listen to this very funny outtake of a silly movie song from the mid 1960's.

Lawdy, Miss Clawdy
This raw and powerful recording of Elvis and some of his original band members from the legendary "'68 Comeback Special" is included to prove that Elvis was still full of Rock 'N' Roll in the late 1960's even though he was making silly movies in Hollywood. This show should also be the turning point for the direction of his career.

Are You Lonesome Tonight?
There are many good stories on why Elvis laughed nearly all the way through this live recoding from 1969. To this day is it still unknown exactly why, but one thing is for sure it's an ear catcher!

The Wonder Of You
Originally a hit for Ray Peterson but Elvis adopted this beautiful song as a tribute to his loyal fans. Elvis often performed it live in the 1970's. This recording from February 1970 is the single version.

Gospel Medley - I John/Bosom Of Abraham/You Better Run/Lead Me, Guide Me/Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus/Nearer My God to Thee
Elvis enjoyed very much to sing gospel songs late at night after shows on tour and in Las Vegas. He often invited the singers from his group to his suite to sing. This recording from 1972 was made at a rehearsal for the upcoming tour. You can hear a relaxed Elvis sing his favourite gospel songs together with J.D. Sumner and the Stamps quartet.

Always on My Mind
Elvis never had a hit with this song. Probably because it ended up as a B side for "Separate Ways". Willie Nelson had a huge hit years later, but many people still remember Elvis' emotional version from 1972. Priscilla left Elvis two months prior to the recording date.

My Way
In 1973 Elvis performed live for 1,5 billion people via satellite. The show was the now legendary "Aloha From Hawaii". Elvis used the occasion to show the world that Elvis could sing all kinds of music. During the 90 min. show he is performing Rock'n'Roll, R'n'B, Pop, Blues, Country, Musical tunes and even gospel inspired songs, but he did it his way.

My Boy
"...I wanted to explain before it gets too late, for your mother and me's love has finally died..." Elvis only had one child, Lisa Marie Presley: were he singing to her when he recorded this song in 1973?

You Gave Me A Mountain
Elvis had a difficult time after Priscilla divorced him. He never accepted that his wife left him. This live recording from 1974 with Priscilla in the audience proves that he very much selected his material and performed it after his mood.

American Trilogy
Elvis was known as a polite southern gentleman, but he could also act fast on stage if somebody shouted at him.

Bitter They Are, Harder They Fall
The last two recording sessions Elvis did took place in the jungle room at his beloved home Graceland. During the recording of this song the phone rang and as if that wasn't enough Elvis' dog also made sure that everybody noticed it.

Unchained Melody
Elvis wanted to make an album that should include this beautiful love song and then feature a picture of him playing the piano on stage on the cover. The album never happened, but the song was included on his last album "Moody Blue". This version is the overdubbed single version that was meant to be on his dream album.

Don't Cry Daddy (Duet with Lisa Marie Presley)
For the 20th anniversary of Elvis' death his only child Lisa Marie Presley recorded her vocal part for a duet with her dad on this beautiful ballad. It was then spliced with Elvis' vocal and the result was played for 15.000 fans in Memphis. The duet has never been officially released.

If I Can Dream (Duet with Celine Dion)
In April 2007 the "American Idol" TV show surprise the whole world by showing Elvis and Celine Dion singing the song "If I Can Dream" as a duet.

"Happy Valentines Day," Axl Rose said with a smirk Sunday night, addressing the 150 very beautiful, very lucky people who landed on the guest list for a private Guns N' Roses concert at the Gramercy Park Hotel's Rose Bar in New York City. Winking and referencing his band, he added: "We're the morning-after pill!!!" Charming. But celebs like Mickey Rourke, Adrian Grenier, Ryan Phillippe, Albert Hammond Jr. and Fab Moretti of the Strokes, Emily Haines of Metric, and Sebastian Bach didn't come for holiday chivalry. They came for badass rock'n'roll -- and they got it. Lots of it. The late-night concert -- an installment of Nur Khan's Rose Bar Sessions, sponsored by Deleon Tequila, One Music, and SPIN -- was a little piece of paradise city: Rose and his six-piece band unleashed a 90-minute, 16-song set spanning all their hits.
GNR performed in front of a fireplace covered in roses, with a black-and-red painting of a skull hanging above. The lights were dim, gorgeous women outnumbered the men 2 to 1, the booze was free, and the light fixture overhead, the singer noted, looked like the spiky thorns of a rosebush. It could have been a scene from a GNR music video. The band opened with "You're Crazy" and "Mr. Brownstone," and proceeded to play acoustic versions of hits from Use Your Illusion, Lies EP, and their 1987 mega-hit Appetite for Destruction, including its eternally awesome lead single "Welcome to the Jungle." The 48-year-old frontman, wearing a brown velvet suit jacket and matching top hat over his red bandana, slithered and tossed the mic from hand to hand as he stretched his vocals on set standout "Nightrain." He slowed the tempo on super ballad "Patience," as the lights overhead turned his gigantic diamond rings into miniature disco balls, and the crowd sang along and waved their lighters in the air (real ones -- thanks, smokers!). The band played only three tracks off their 15-years-in-the-making 2008 record Chinese Democracy: "Catcher in the Rye," "Street of Dreams," and "Sorry." The sound, especially Rose's vocals, was occasionally muddy, but the bandmembers -- keyboardist Dizzy Reed, drummer Frank Ferrer, bassist (and former Replacement) Tommy Stinson, and three guitarists -- the chain-smoking DJ Ashba (Yes, that's his real name. No, he's not an actual disc jockey), Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal, and Richard Fortus -- played admirably through the slog. Overall, the show was a reminder that love 'em or hate 'em, Axl and GNR created some of the most quintessential rock songs of the '80s and '90s. GNR's cover of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" scored loudest crowd reaction of the night, with second place going to set-closer "Paradise City." On the latter, as Stinson sang backup, a very sweaty Rose ripped of his top hat, jacket, and sunglasses. In a red bandana, unbuttoned shirt, and blue jeans, he recalled the iconic Axl from the late '80s -- only 20 years older and 30 pounds heavier. "It sounds really good," commented one hardcore fan. "Hey, I can just close my eyes and pretend it's 1987!"

"L'origine du monde" è una delle operi più celebri del pittore francese Gustave Courbet. Realizzata nel 1866, grazie anche al suo realistico erotismo grafico ha il potere di far discutere ancora oggi. Wikipedia ci informa che nel 2009 "alcune copie di un libro raffiguranti L'Origine come copertina sono state sequestrate dalla polizia a Braga, in Portogallo, che le contestava come "pubblica pornografia".

E' invece degli scorsi giorni il caso che ha visto come protagonista un utente di Facebook e lo stesso social network. L'utente, ha dato mandato ad un avvocato di intentare causa a Facebook. L'anonimo avrebbe usato proprio "L'origine du monde" all'interno della propria pagina con il risultato di vedersi bannato l'account. Dal punto di vista legale, il non aver risposto alle email dell'avvocato deporrebbe a sfavore di Facebook.

Venendo alla questione artistica, c'è da dire che "L'origine du monde" non sembra proprio piacere ai censori del social network. Durante lo scorso febbraio era avvenuto un caso analogo, protagonisti ancora una volta il dipinto di Courbet e l'artista danese Frode Steinicke. Anche a Steinicke era stato bloccato l'accesso al proprio account, salvo poi ripristinarlo con il divieto di presentare nudi integrali, "L’origine du monde" compresa.

Morale della storia? Gli addetti al controllo del materiale pubblicato su Facebook non hanno alcun interesse a distinguere tra arte e pornografia. Inoltre, se volete farvi bannare a vita, è sufficiente pubblicare una bella riproduzione dell' "L’origine du monde" di Courbet.
