Ciao Sydney

Non sono un esperto di necrologi, né avevo nel cassetto della scrivania un "coccodrillo" pronto per il grande Sydney Pollack, morto ieri all'età di 73 anni nella sua casa di Los Angeles. Oltre che regista e produttore cinematografico, Pollack è stato anche un ottimo attore. Il Corbaccio, che ha avuto l'onore di conoscerlo di persona al Festival di Venezia del 2000, lo ricorderà sempre nei panni dell'agente di Michael Dorsey/Dustin Hoffman in "Tootsie", uno dei suoi film più celebri ed acclamati. Nel videoclip qui sopra potrete gustare anche voi l'esilarante battibecco tra l'esasperato George (Pollack) ed il "fiero rompipalle" Michael (Hoffman), una scoppiettante girandola di battute degna del miglior Ben Hecht (non a caso, l'American Film Institute ha posto "Tootsie" in seconda posizione nella sua classifica delle migliori cento commedie statunitensi). A chi conoscesse poco o niente dell'opera di Pollack, consiglio caldamente di vedere almeno "Non si uccidono così anche i cavalli?", "Yakuza" e "I tre giorni del Condor".

Michael Dorsey/Dustin Hoffman: Are you saying that nobody in New York will work with me?

Sydney Pollack/George Fields: Nobody in Hollywood wants to work with you either. I can't even send you up for a commercial. You played a tomato for thirty seconds, and they went over schedule because you wouldn't sit down.

Michael Dorsey/Dustin Hoffman: Yes, it wasn't logical.

Sydney Pollack/George Fields: You were a tomato! A tomato doesn't have logic. A tomato can't move!

Michael Dorsey/Dustin Hoffman: That's what I said. So if it can't move, how's it going to sit down? I was a stand-up tomato. A juicy, sexy, beefsteak tomato! Nobody does vegetables like me! I did an evening of vegetables off-Broadway! I did the best tomato, the best cucumber! I did an endive salad that knocked the critics on their ass!

Sydney Pollack/George Fields: Michael, I'm trying to stay calm here. You are a wonderful actor...

Michael Dorsey/Dustin Hoffman: Thank you.

Sydney Pollack/George Fields: ... but you're too much trouble. Get some therapy!
